I had the exact same error with 2.2.16 (I think that something happened
after 2.2.15). The problem happily disappeared when I removed gpm,
which is currently unmaintained anyway. Aside from being unable to
change my Synaptics options (which gpm screwed up, too), my system
is much happier now.
