I would put it the other way around: if it changes (i.e. it's dynamic) then
there's no point in supplying a system call. In that case any need for a
max reveals lame programming.

There are only three fundamentally correct numbers: 0, 1 or infinity. All
others are arbitrary (deliberately leaving out 42 ;-)
