The machine was under heavy load on both the disk and cpu while I was
looking around and extracting archives looking to see where I could find the
agpgart.o modules and its source. I was telneted in. While using bash's
autocomplete feature all of the sudden my shell would be killed off. After
a few times of this happening I checked dmesg and found the crashes. After
saving the oops. I tried shutting down the machine but the shutdown died
incomplete in the middle of its operation. I then tried using the sysrq
emergency syncing, remounting r/o, and rebooting. The sysrq emergency
syncing started but never ended. No other sysrq commands functioned after
that. Upon reboot the automatic check crapped out near the end of checking
the drive and I continued to get funcky behavior after rebooting. Including
oops when the kernel was loading. Finally I took a slackware boot disk,
booted into single user mode with it, ran e2fsck, and reinstalled lilo (in
the reboots the kernel did not always start loading), and rebooted. This
resolved the problems and the system is currently back up.
