This is definitely a GCC 2.96 problem - the same thing happened to me when
I used it to compile the kernel. What you want to do is get the kgcc &
related packages from rawhide, and use that to compile the kernel. It is
egcs 2.91.66, the recommended version for compiling the kernel.
