It DOES understand that. The Red Hat installer does the right thing and
install a proper kernel.

My RH6.2 install CD has the following:

kernel-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
kernel-2.2.16-3.i586.rpm
kernel-2.2.16-3.i686.rpm
kernel-smp-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
kernel-smp-2.2.16-3.i586.rpm
kernel-smp-2.2.16-3.i686.rpm
