You might have been bitten by the spurious dependencies that pulls in
both ipchains and ip_conntrack which do not co-exist well. It has been
reported that modules.dep contains lines like this.

ipchains does not export any symbols, nor does it suppress symbol
export so the default is export everything. This results in duplicate
exported symbols which confuses depmod. This patch appears to fix the
problem, apply, make modules, make modules_install.
