Hi there,
I am pretty new with SMP (just bought the computer a few weeks
ago) but I already ran into some serious problems while using
Linux. The cpu's have been tested by the person who sold the
computer to me in W1n2k (I've seen the tests so the hardware
works I belive). However .. Under Linux I get some failing
results :( -I removed the installation of win2k so I can't
repeat any tests on win2k-
I am running all my kernels with "noapic" because
there is noway that I can get a kernel to boot with apic.
the 2.4.x series just hang after the APIC tests and the
2.2.19 hangs while detecting my hdc device (DVD player).
Besides that I also get these errors :
(At the moment of these errors I was using 2.2.19)
Aug 21 11:44:01 pluisje kernel: stuck on TLB IPI wait (CPU#3)
Aug 21 11:47:00 pluisje last message repeated 2 times
Aug 21 11:48:03 pluisje last message repeated 14 times
Aug 21 11:52:52 pluisje kernel: stuck on TLB IPI wait (CPU#3)
Aug 21 11:55:32 pluisje last message repeated 3 times
Aug 21 11:58:47 pluisje kernel: stuck on TLB IPI wait (CPU#3)
Aug 21 12:00:45 pluisje kernel: stuck on TLB IPI wait (CPU#3)
Each time they occur the computer hangs for +- 10 seconds
I've also noticed that it happens more frequently (but not only)
while playing mp3s (xmms).
(note. I only have 2 cpu's named 0 and 1 on 2.4.x and
named 0 and 3 on 2.2.19. I don't know why 2.2.x gives
the 2e cpu a different name then 2.4.x does)
On 2.4.x kernels I am having problems when trying to switch
from a console to an X screen; Using a kernel with SMP
support : everything hangs (no tcp/ip to). My temporary
display hardware : S3 Virge (4mb) and a voodoo2.
When I boot a kernel with no SMP support and/or replace
the second CPU with my dummy CPU then I don't have
any problems at all (except of course a slower system)
My hardware :
Asus CUV4X-D Motherboard
http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/Pentiumpro/Cuv4x-d/index.html
2 x Pentium 3 Coppermine 1000Mhz
512 Mbram
ps. Some other very wierd things happen when switching kernels :)
follow this (and check the processor ID's on both kernels ! -> wierd) :
