[1.] One line summary of the problem:
     /var corruption after 2.4.15 and 2.5.0 reboot
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
On a Dell Optiplex 300MHz PII I build 2.4.15 kernel and 2.5.0 kernel
for SMP with no errors and boot with no errors. When I reboot from
either kernel, the system pumps out error messages and ends the boot
after displaying that it starts logging. I can not boot until I
     force a fsck on /var.
[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):
     /lock/subsys, boot, file system
[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
     2.4.15 and 2.5.0 compiled with gcc 3.0.1
[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information
     resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
I attach excerpt from /var/log/messages after a restart where fsck
had to be run to clear the errors.
[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the
     problem (if possible)
