aic7xxx driver error at boot for Adaptec AIC-7899P U160

From: Bill Gardner (bgardner@transzap.com)
Date: Fri Nov 22 2002 - 18:31:24 EST

Hello!

We are seeing some strange errors at boot time from the aic7xxx driver.

Relevant HW/SW Info:

Host: Racksaver (Model: RS-1129) with dual AMD Athlon(tm) MP 2100+ cpu's
Motherboard: Tyan S2468 with an onboard Adaptec AIC-7899P U160/m (rev
01).
   Dist: Redhat 7.3
   Kernel: Linux version 2.4.18-3smp (bhcompile@porky.devel.redhat.com)
      (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-110)) #1 SMP Thu
Apr 18 06:59:55 EDT 2002

Relevant Console errors:

scsi0:0:0:0: Attempting to queue an ABORT message
scsi0: Dumping Card State while idle, at SEQADDR 0x44

...whole bunch of aic7xxx dump messages (see below for complete list)

   scsi0:0:0:0: Command already completed
   aic7xxx_abort returns 0x2002
scsi0:0:0:0: Attempting to queue an ABORT message
scsi0: Dumping Card State while idle, at SEQADDR 0x44

...more dump messages, and finally (ditto)

   scsi0:0:0:0: Command already completed
   aic7xxx_abort returns 0x2002
scsi0:0:0:0: Attempting to queue a TARGET RESET message
scsi0:0:0:0: Is not an active device
   aic7xxx_dev_reset returns 0x2002
scsi: device set offline - not ready or command retry failed after bus
reset: host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
Vendor: IBM Model: IC35L018UWD210-0 Rev: S5BS
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03
scsi0:A:6:0: Tagged Queuing enabled. Depth 253
Attached scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0
   (scsi0:A:6): 160.000MB/s transfers (80.000MHz DT, offset 63, 16bit)
SCSI device sda: 35843670 512-byte hdwr sectors (18352 MB)

Once the driver sees the IBM disk at scsi0:A:6 everything seems fine and the
hosts seem to
run fine after this but I am naturally concerned when I see a whole lotta
error messages
when I boot these things.

I have included below:

1. Contents of /proc/scsi/scsi
2. Contents of /proc/scsi/aic7xxx/0
3. Complete console messages from a boot with modules.conf options entry for
the aic7xxx:
   options aic7xxx aic7xxx='"verbose"'
4. Contents of /proc/cpuinfo
5. Output from lspci -vv

Thanks for any pointers...

..billg
