Yes, but I am referring to the read of the sectors that result in a 0x40
(uncorrectable ECC error, based on driver definition). If we use micro
second timers, we are monitoring the time it takes for a READ to return.
This is exactly what I suggested in the previous e-mail. Measure the amount
of time it takes to do a READ.
The idea of generating statistics to predict the state of the drive is a
good idea. However, we will have to maintain the sector information also
that resulted in long READ times. Rather than doing the remapping after all
the information is generated, we might as well do the remap on the fly.

Not all ECC errors are related to the actual sector of data.
Many are related to the actually ECC ckecksum and provide one does not
have a failure of more that 3 bits contigious or a max of 15 bits total
for the data and ECC data for the given sector it should be okay.
The simple fact is all drives have errors and execute ECC recovery.
One of the ways I was looking to determine if this activity was excess
would be to use micro second timers for transaction returns. The
statistics generated would provide a gauge of the state of the drive and
the quality of the media.
I will consider looking into this later in the future, at this time I have
over issues to resolve.
