Kernel oops in pppoe any time I use ifconfig on the underlying eth iface

This is a pretty easy one to reproduce so it seems like it should be easy to
find. I use kernel-mode pppoe. In 2.4.20ac2 Any time I use ifconfig to change
a parameter on the underlying eth interface I get a kernel oops and pppd dies.

The following is an oops from changing the mtu (accidentally, typed in wrong
window, oops). Previously I got the same behaviour from doing "ifconfig down"
which used to be a clean way to hang up a pppoe connection treated equivalent
to a modem hanging up.
