They are not necessarily initialized via 'initme'. Only if it returns with
a return value >= 0. So it's a bit more complex:

	if (x)
		rc = init_me(a, &y);
	else
		rc = init_me(b, &y);
	if (rc < 0)
		/* y unitialized */
		return;
	use(y);
