 Maybe i am just making myself a fool but i'll bite:
 this has allways worked for me

 make && sudo make install && sudo make modules_install
 sudo mkintramfs -o /boot/initrd-$kernel_version  $kernel_version
 sudo update-grub
 [ reboot the machine ]
