Diff is basically:

+                       # Flatten any obvious string concatentation.
+                       while ($dstat =~ s/("X*")\s*$Ident/$1/ ||
+                              $dstat =~ s/$Ident\s*("X*")/$1/)
+                       {
+                       }

Yes, that works and is appropriate.
