OK, revisiting this between decorating, changing line 1691 in 
include/linux/sched.h to reflect 'inline':

from:
static int pid_alive(const struct task_struct *p);

to:
static inline int pid_alive(const struct task_struct *p);

stops GCC yelling at me.
