Not sure that it's any prettier, but you could use an ioctl to switch
between different read requests:
ioctl(mfd, FSOPEN_READ_OPTIONS);
read(mfd, ....);
ioctl(mfd, FSOPEN_READ_MOUNT_ID);
read(mfd, ....);
