I'm sorry, but that's way too convoluted.

I was thinking of just doing something like

-               return string(buf, end, "(ptrval)", spec);
+               return string(buf, end, sizeof(void *) == 8 ?
"(====ptrval====)" : "(ptrval)", spec);
