I use emacs.

I have some setups in my ~/.emacs
although I am not an expert of emacs lisp.

(setq cperl-tab-always-indent t)
            (setq tab-width 8)
            (setq indent-tabs-mode t)
            ))




Then, emacs can understand that
my preference is tab-indentation
with 8 character width.
