Thanks for the suggestion about card=9 Hans, however unfortunately 
setting that module parameter has no noticeable effect.  I also tried 
card=5 then card=21 from here: 
https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/media/cx231xx-cardlist.html with the 
same results.

I'm not sure what is causing the issue but it sure isn't obvious, to me 
at least :).
