1.2.13 and ELF, compiling as ELF

I know that in the 1.3.x the later kernels all have the config option
to compile the kernel as an ELF kernel, in ELF format. However,
when making a 1.2.13 kernel for a stable system, I didn't see that option
in the makefile. I also noticed that ld was trying to link with -qmagic,
probably a _BAD_ idea when all the .o files are in ELF format. Can I compile
as ELF, or should I just use -b i486-linuxaout in the makefile options?

Thanks any and all,
