Install a more recent version of sysvinit:
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/Daemons/init/
The latest version is usually kept at:
ftp://ftp.cistron.nl/pub/People/miquels/
Last time I looked, it was sysvinit-2.58-5.tar.gz, but that was not
very recently.
