I've had trouble also on machines fairly stable throughout the .70s &
.80s, but only when the NFS server is using 1.3.90. I'm using NFS
server 2.2beta14. Accessing large files fails with NFS timeout error
(the disk is mounted soft). The only error messages I could find were
these: (NFS client is deanna running 1.3.84, NFS server is riker
running 1.3.90).

Apr 16 14:41:51 deanna icmpinfo: ICMP_Time_Exceeded < 206.190.83.4 [riker.miranova.com] - 206.190.83.1 [deanna.miranova.com] > 206.190.83.4 [riker.miranova.com] sp=56834 dp=2049 seq=0x10ac52e5 sz=36(+20)
Apr 16 14:41:53 deanna last message repeated 2 times
Apr 16 14:42:34 deanna icmpinfo: ICMP_Time_Exceeded < 206.190.83.4 [riker.miranova.com] - 206.190.83.1 [deanna.miranova.com] > 206.190.83.4 [riker.miranova.com] sp=56834 dp=2049 seq=0x10ac52a9 sz=36(+20)
Apr 16 14:48:24 deanna icmpinfo: ICMP_Time_Exceeded < 206.190.83.4 [riker.miranova.com] - 206.190.83.1 [deanna.miranova.com] > 206.190.83.4 [riker.miranova.com] sp=56834 dp=2049 seq=0x10aca5fd sz=36(+20)

Riker is an i486/DX 66/8MB with Ether Express, and has been reasonably
stable. Deanna is i486/Cyrix DX 66/32MB with 3c509 and reasonably
stable at 1.3.84.
