1.3.94: open () still slower than 1.2.13

Ye Gods,

Time taken to fgrep through 5,517 files, each 1.2k:

1.3.90.89: 23 seconds
1.3.91: 21 seconds
1.3.94: 21 seconds

1.2.13-elf: 14 seconds

Timings are for the second time around, when everything's cached;
first time around takes ~32 seconds on all kernels.

I assume this is the 'slow-open' problem mentioned earlier, and
posited fixed in 1.3.91. I'll try finding it myself, but I'll get to
it slowly.
