I always manually install the kernel, keep them in /kernels, and keep the
corresponding config and System.maps there too....i.e.:
endor:/kernels# ls -l *-1.2.13-hp[3-7]
-rw-r----- 1 root root 73056 Mar 9 23:28 System.map-1.2.13-hp3
-rw-r----- 1 root root 76094 Mar 19 21:42 System.map-1.2.13-hp4
-rw-r----- 1 root root 81118 Apr 27 22:07 System.map-1.2.13-hp7
-rw-r----- 1 root root 2787 Mar 9 23:15 config-1.2.13-hp3
-rw-r----- 1 root root 2990 Mar 19 21:22 config-1.2.13-hp4
-rw-r----- 1 root root 2953 Apr 27 21:56 config-1.2.13-hp7
-rw-r----- 1 root root 322564 Mar 9 23:29 vmlinuz-1.2.13-hp3
-rw-r----- 1 root root 338948 Mar 19 21:42 vmlinuz-1.2.13-hp4
-rw-r----- 1 root root 371716 Apr 27 22:07 vmlinuz-1.2.13-hp7
Sometimes, I even write a little desc-1.2.blah-blah file that leaves
notes as to any special patches I've included in that particular kernel.
