I've tried (completely ignorant) to build a a.out Linux kernel with
my ELD system. I just said "n" to "compile kernel as ELF?" and made
"zImage". Everythink worked fine until the linking phase. Then I got
undefined external references in misc.o, and the output said
something like "the kernel size is 20".

I know that I've made something stupid, but can't we somehow catch
this error more elegantly (i.e. earlier)?

Upon request I can supply the complete .config and error messages.
