I switched from 1.2.13 to 1.3.9x after about a year of not using Linux too
much (diploma thesis, you know), and when booting the new kernel,
it had changed the TERM value, and had some severe trouble to get vi working
again. I patched the kernel code somewhere...
BTW: before 1.3.95 shutdown now halted the system - now it goes to single user mode
why was this changed, and how? I just rebooted a different kernel...
Bottom line: If 2.0 is released, there _must_ be clear guidelines how to
upgrade from any known and widespread linux version and patch level.
And if "backup, reformat, reinstall, restore" is the way to go,
say it! With a tape, this can be done in a day, more or less unsupervised.
Replacing all the necessary packages by hand is - at least - time-consuming.
Just my 0.02$
