What happened to strace?

What's happened to strace with the latest kernels? When I now run
'strace sendmail -q', I get very strange output:

This is with libc 4.7.6, 1.3.97 and sendmail 8.7.5.

I tried compiling strace 3.0 from the Debian distribution, but got a few
mysterious errors:
