resetting internal modem

I wonder if anyone on the list could help, I'm having trouble with my
internal modem stopping talking to anything. Is there any way I can force
it to reset? Maybe unloading/reloadind the serial module may work, I
haven't tried yet. Often the modem dies just after it takes the phone off
hook and then keeps it off-hook, this is very annoying since I have to
reboot to get my phone back.

There doesnt seem to be any IOCTL's or settings I can throw at the kernel
to make it reset the serial ports, setserial or stty does nothing.
minicom also can no longer get any response from the modem when it hangs.
I tried linux-serial with no joy, maybe this is a kernal bug?
