Problem when closing SLIP connection pre2.0.4 and pre 2.0.6

Whenever I fire up a slip connection (via dip -k) the screen goes blank.
The system is still running because I can login via a virtual console.
According to ps it seems all processes are still running. This started to
happen about a week ago, I am not sure which kernel version started the problem
but know both pre-2.0.4 and pre-2.0.6 suffer from this problem.

Does anybody else experience the same problem?
Could it be related to the accelerated xserver I am running?

Any help is appreciated.
