If the loopback device is up and running in ifconfig okay, then the errors
were probably when your system tried to "route add -net 127.0.0.1".. This is
no longer acceptable and will fail.. In this event, the loopback device will
be running but you will have no route to it, thus breaking many things that
require being able to use the address 127.0.0.1.
If you are running RedHat, the change is to be made in:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-lo
Change the last argument to route add -net to just 127.0.0.0 instead of the
variable that it currently resolves to (${IPADDRESS})..
If you are running Slackware, then I have no clue where that broken
distribution chooses to add the route to the loopback device.. rc.inet,
probably..
