Odd scsi tape error

My scsi tape is hanging during backup, but only when I backup from a text
console. When I backup from a window in X, it works fine. I know this
make no sense at all, but that's what I'm getting. No error messages come
out. The backup just hangs forever (in text console mode).
The scsi tape drive is a Python dat drive.

I'm backing up with the following command...

tar -czpvf /dev/st0 System.* vmlinuz* bin boot etc home install lib root
sbin shlib tmp usr var

Yes, I know I'm using a brain dead backup method, but I don't know a
better one.

My system...
linux 2.0
all the newest gcc and libc stuff
Acelerated X (mentioned because X is involved)
Matrox Mill pci card.

Sorry I don't have any more info. I'm not sure what would cause this to
happen, so I'm not sure what to mention about my setup.
