NFS breaks with 2.0.6/2.0.5

I have a unit running Slackware 3.0 with Linux 2.0.6 (several packages
upgraded NOT nfs).

The root directory is mounted by another Slackware 3.0 system with Linux
2.0.5.

It works for a time then it breaks with "NFS Server xx not responding..".
