Strange it was. There I am innocently installing Perl modules from my
IDE CDROM to my new big hard drive and suddenly there's nothing on any of
the drives or anything..

but typing reboot

worked??

When the system came up again it had damage across most of the
partitions (isize too big on the root partition stopped the boot for
manual repair). I'll put it down to one off strangenesses and crappy
hardware for now, but if anyone else has something similar give a
shout..
