LILO and NT signatures

I found that LILO overwrites the disk signatures that the NT disk
administrator places on them (apparently into the boot sector).
As a result, all user-assigned drive letters are lost in NT, because
they apparently rely on those signatures.
Has anybody else seen this problem, or knows technical details on those
signatures (like where they are located), or even has a fix to LILO to
leave them intact?

TIA,
Martin

P.S. Just to make this a kernel related message (-: disk signatures are
an option to recognize a drive in a world of changing SCSI IDs and
minor device numbers. Now, the boot sector is probably to small to
store mount information for all operating systems - so we might
even share the disk signature with NT, instead of overwriting it.
