mount bad fs = panic?

While trying to mount a partition I thought had a backup of my system, I
managed to cause a kernel panic in 2.0.4. It turned out, the partition I
was trying to mount was a 1gb partition that had not yet been mke2fs'd.
Apparently it had the remains of an old 3gb partition in it's beginning,
and other valid partitions created over parts of the original 3gb part.

My question is, should mounting such a broken partition cause a panic or
just an error message? e2fsck complained alot, but didn't cause a
panic. While reading throught the e2fsck messgaes, I remembered what I
had done, quit, and mke23fs'd it.
