Network performance...

I know this probably isn't Linux's fault, but I've noticed that a few
dropped ACKs can REALLY slaughter network performance (he says, as he
averages 253.6 bytes/s ftp'ing the latest mosaic over a 28.8 PPP
link). Is there anything I can tune to possibly allow Linux faster
recovery from transient net errors, at the expense of a few tenths of
a kbyte/s under ideal conditions? Or might there be a real problem
present here?
