Is the NE1000 a network card? I don't think that is too important in
this problem, because I have had the same problem with a 3c509 card and
the on-board 3c590.
BTW, Christopher Neufeld was able to duplicate my SMP lockup, also with
a DELL Optiplex GX Pro (dual P6-200, 440fx, on-board 440fx, SCSI disk).
He also used hard mounts with rsize=8192 (I think).
