It must be you, because I get all my patches from ftp.cs.helsinki.fi, and I
haven't seen this problem. Case in point:

jacques [494] uname -a
Linux jacques 2.1.10 #1 Fri Nov 15 11:28:00 CST 1996 i486

So it worked for me.
