BTW, I would suguest a HP 48 GX, not a SX, since the S series is getting
kind of old.
In any case, wether or not the HP48 is emulating a VT52 correctly (it most
likely is), or even putting out proper signals to the serial port, these
(possibaly) bad inputs such as those should certinally not cause the
kernel to freeze (refergrator jokes non-withstanding). My guess to the
actual source of the problem is that the serial port is set to a faster
speed then a poor old HP48SX can handle (9600 bps, with a good emulator).
