Linux Kernel 2.1.XX Error producing compressed Image

I am sorry to put such question :

After compiling the kernel I got an uncompressed image under
./linux-3.1.XX vmlinux = 879 815 bytes
./linux-3.1.XX/arch/i386/boot zImage = 18 397 bytes
./linux-3.1.XX/arch/i386/boot/compressed vmlinux = 15 833 byes

I use gcc version 2.7.2 ELF
libc 5.3.12 ELF
ld 1.7.14

I am not a novice kernel hackers: I compiled my kernel since ver 1.3
This is the first time I meet such a problem.
