VFS Probems on Alpha

Running the stock RedHat 4.1 Noname kernel on a Dec UDB(166), I
got tons and tons and tons of errors:

VFS: No free inodes - contact Linus

I stopped counting somewhere near the 35,000 mark. Machine would
not respond to any network activity, and console was unusable as the
errors made it impossible to type. On hard boot, machine fsck'ed clean,
and displayed no errors on boot.
All logs for a full day prior to our first VFS error are
completely boring, and show no suspicious data.
