aha152x + tar = death

i've been getting system lockups when trying to use the aha152x driver
with an HP SuperStore DAT tape drive. there are no messages logged.

story follows:

i just installed an aha1522 scsi card in my 486 box with RH4.1+updates;
kernel is upgraded to 2.0.29.

on said adapter i have hanging a Jaz drive and an HP SuperStore Tape 6000
DAT drive (DSS-2).

i have scsi drive, tape and cdrom support compiled into the kernel (NOT
modules, since i read on the archives that monolithic tape drivers are
more stable...). the system comes up fine, recognizing the host adapter
and the drives.

the Jaz drive works just fine.

the DAT sorta works - i can usually write most of a tar archive, i can
usually extract most of a tar archive, but i can NEVER list a tar archive.
the failure mode for all of these operations is complete system lockup.

i've succesfully used both of these drives on a PPro with a BT-958, so i
know the drives are ok.

i have the jumpers altered somewhat from default - i.e., no floppy
controller, no boot, and the BIOS is deactivated.

any hints on getting the aha152x driver to like my DAT?
