Me too, using [pre-2.1.38-1] and Netscape 3.01 with XFree86 3.2.

I had the same problem yesterday. I don' t remember the http://... where I
had the lock.
I thought the lock was caused from the AWE32 0.4.0 driver unstable, but
sound card was not used when the lock was started.

I have an Intel Pentium 166 with 32Mega of Ram. I have similar problem
sometimes when I try to use the EMU8K of my awe32 with drvmidi. If you
want never have problems as this you must use 2.0 kernel and stable
version of sofware obviously.
