that's a bash "feature" telling you that tar didn't read all the data.
very often compressed tar files are padded to 10k records with null bytes,
but tar stops reading when it sees one block (512bytes) of nulls as next file header,
leaving all the remaining null bytes in the pipe.
using the "i" option for gnu-tar (before version 1.12) will read all remaining bytes and thus
suppress this message.
using gtar-1.12 will "fix" it too.
