hard locks with FDDI in 2.0.29/2.0.30

Well, after griping for a while I've finally got physical connectivity to
the campus fiber! =) Now, I'm having troubles with getting the machine
to stay up with the fddi interface ifconfig-upped.

System is slackware 3.1 + upgrade-in-a-box patch + Becker's 3Com 3c905
v30-all driver.

I'm using the DEC DEFPA FDDI board, with the stock drivers from
2.0.29/2.0.30. The behavior is the same with either version.

As soon as I type "ifconfig fddi0 <std. flags deleted for brevity> up",
the whole machine works for about 30 seconds to a minute, then crashes.

Oh, one more thing: the MAC address field on the FDDI card after ifconfig
is extremely long, but looks sort-of valid. Do FDDI cards have wierd MAC
addresses, or is this really one of the symptoms of a hardware or software
conflict, as I would normally assume?

Any ideas, folks?
