I've been using this patch for many months...but it's no longer necessary.
In pre-2.0.31, you can just echo a big number to
/proc/sys/net/core/net_alias_max before ifconfiging any of the alias
devices.

Using the patch the just takes away the limit, I did something similar,
created 1024 aliases, and it didn't seem to cause problems.
Where the original poster will run into trouble is file handles. The
simple solution there is to run several copies of apache listening to a
hundred or so virtuals each, or log them all to one file.
