3c509 driver in 2.0.31-pre2

Hi, all. I tried 2.0.31-pre2 the other day and I was no longer able
to insmod the 3c509 module. Why not? Because I had specified the I/O
address (the "io" variable) which does not exist in the new driver. If
I took out the io=xxxx option, it seemed to work OK. However, if I
take this option out, when I boot other kernels (like 2.0.30), the
3c509 driver complains about module probing only working reliably on
an EISA bus.
Is the 2.0.31-pre2 driver now able to probe for the I/O address safely
when loaded as a module (for ISA cards)? Note that I don't have plug
and pray enabled (I don't know if that would make a difference).
If the 2.0.31-pre2 driver really doesn't need the I/O address, can we
at least have an "io" variable left in the module for backwards
compatibility? It can easily be ignored.

Regards,

Richard....
