And yet, for all that lack of "strict formatting", I find the kernel a joy
to read... Its clear, straight forward. It gets to the point, and does it
relatively elegantly. Its evident the coders take pride in what they do,
and that they are more concerned with utility than some fancy dancy markup
scheme for the code.

You are absolutely right about flexibility. Linus has kept it "hackable".
I dont know about you, but for me, "hackable" code is much more readable
than "perfect" code in "immaculate" style thats harder to find a way to
modify somehow without breaking the whole damn scheme.
