10 minutes to 14 hours? Mmmmm. On my P90/48MB (96MBswap), a regular
compile takes 7 minutes. In single user mode, under 31-pre7 +Werner's
buffer patch:

I maxed out w/ 38MB swapped used, load of 14 (average of 7).

An interesting note, my script that I use failed with this patch level :(
When running a
concurrent "vmstat 10", gcc bombs out after about 3 or 4 minutes with an
internal error - signal 7. <shrug>.
