popper probs with newer 2.1.x kernels

I've been trying to upgrade my OS to 2.1.47, 2.1.57, etc. for the past
couple of months. It works ok, except the POP server freaks out. I
get these messages from it:

snowy:~> telnet pop 110

+OK QPOP (version 2.2) at wikt.anc.greatland.net starting.

/var/spool/mail is NFS-mounted, which is why I have qpopper using
/var/spool/pop for its lockfiles. This setup works fine with 2.0.27 (that
version being why I want to upgrade it).

Any ideas? I'm at a loss to explain this.

I'm not currently on this list, so if you have a thought, make sure to Cc: me.

Thanks,
